I grew up on a small island off the coast of Honduras.

I don't live there anymore, but home has a way of finding you when you least expect it.

This is one of those stories.

There is nothing beautiful about a MoneyGram counter.

Fluorescent lights. A line that barely moves. The hum of a place no one wants to be.

I was standing in line at one in West Palm Beach when I heard the teller ask the woman beside me where she was from.

"Honduras," she replied.

Without thinking, I smiled.

"So am I."

She smiled back.

"What part?"

"Roatán."

"What part of Roatán?"

"Coxen Hole."

Her face lit up.

"Me too."

For a moment, we weren't standing in Florida anymore. We were two women from the same small island who had somehow found each other hundreds of miles from home.

Then she looked at me more closely.

"Tell me something… is your last name Coleman?"

"Yes," I said.

She paused.

"Don't tell me your mama was Erma Coleman."

"She was," I said.

My mother had passed away twenty-one years earlier, yet this woman recognized her in my face almost immediately. She was only forty-eight when she died, but she had already given people something they were still carrying all these years later.

Then came the smile.

It always starts with the smile. I've seen it my whole life. Whenever someone realizes who my mother was, they smile before they say anything else.

Then comes the sentence:

"Your mother was such a kind woman."

I've heard those words in Roatán. I've heard them at church. I've heard them from people passing by who stopped just to tell me how much they loved her. And now I was hearing them in Florida, from a stranger at a MoneyGram counter.

I wasn't surprised. The truth is, I already knew what she was going to say.

I never needed to wonder if people were just being polite when they spoke about her. I knew who my mother was, and I knew their words were real. People don't remember my mother because they feel they should. They remember her because of how she made them feel.

My mother wasn't wealthy. She wasn't famous. She never held an important title. There will never be a building with her name on it.

She simply lived her life with kindness. She welcomed people. She treated them with warmth. She made people feel seen.

Twenty-one years later, that is still what people carry.

We spend so much of our lives chasing the wrong kind of legacy. Money. Recognition. Status. We convince ourselves that being remembered requires something extraordinary.

My mother taught me something different: sometimes the greatest thing you leave behind is the way you treated people.

That woman at the counter didn't remember what my mother owned or accomplished. She remembered kindness.

Her name was Erma Coleman. If you ever find yourself in Coxen Hole, ask someone if they remember her.

Then watch their face.

I walked into The Odyssey expecting an epic adventure.

A legendary hero. Monsters. Battles. A story that has survived for thousands of years.

What I didn't expect was to leave the theater thinking about morality.

Nolan's film is visually stunning. Nothing feels artificial. In an era where blockbusters lean on CGI for everything, The Odyssey feels tangible. It feels like a world you could reach out and touch.

That alone is worth the biggest screen you can find.

Now I'm going to say something, and I'm not taking it back:

This movie should have been in British English.

There's something about that accent that just fits myths, kingdoms, and legends. To me, it sounds bougie, in the best way. I can't picture The Lord of the Rings hitting the same without it. The accent is half the atmosphere.

But my biggest problem wasn't the filmmaking.

It was that I already knew the story.

There's a scene that should have had me on the edge of my seat. The Greeks are inside Troy. They're trying to open the gates so the army can flood in. The music is pounding, building, building.

And I caught myself thinking, "Okay. Get on with it. I know how this ends."

For someone seeing this story for the first time, that moment must have been electric. For me, it never landed. Instead of feeling the suspense, I was admiring the craftsmanship. I respected what Nolan was doing. I just rarely felt consumed by it.

Then something happened I wasn't expecting.

One phrase kept echoing through the film.

Zeus' Law.

Treat others as you would want to be treated. The stranger standing in front of you could be a god in disguise.

Of everything in The Odyssey, that's what stayed with me.

Not the monsters. Not the battles. Not even the cinematography.

That.

Then I thought about Odysseus himself.

The film shows a man who lives by principles. Even while hunting, he gives the animal fair warning before he takes the shot.

And yet this is the same man who dreamed up the Trojan Horse.

The Greeks didn't beat Troy by breaking down its walls. They won by convincing the Trojans to welcome a gift into their own city, then destroying them from the inside.

Brilliant strategy. Built on a lie.

So which one is he? The man who warns the deer, or the man who built the horse?

Maybe we all are.

Maybe that's why Zeus' Law exists in the first place, not because being good is easy, but because it isn't.

Even for heroes.

Life is hard enough on its own.

Most of us aren't going to change the world. Most of us won't get famous. Most of us won't get rich.

But every single one of us gets the same choice, every single day.

We can choose to be decent. We can choose kindness. We can choose to treat the stranger in front of us like they might be a god in disguise.

I walked into that theater to watch a man fight his way home.

I walked out thinking about something simpler, and harder.

Just be a good person.

Sometimes that's the greatest journey of all.
